A cataract is a clouding of the lens, the natural lens of the eye, which causes blurred vision, sensitivity to light and difficulty seeing clearly. Cataract surgery involves removing this clouded lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) that restores vision.
The steps of this procedure include:
  • Phacoemulsification: A technique used to break up and aspirate the lens using ultrasound.
  • IOL implantation: An artificial lens is inserted into the eye to replace the natural lens.

Cataract screening is usually done through:
  • a visual acuity test
  • a slit-lamp examination (biomicroscope)
As for treatment, the only treatment for cataracts is surgical, and it is the most commonly performed.
With advances in surgical techniques, treatment methods and implants, any cataract procedure remains very safe and reliable.
Accordingly, any surgical treatment will aim to:
  • Remove the clouded lens
  • Insert an intraocular implant (artificial lens), while preserving the lens’s natural capsule, which will serve as support for the implant.

The main goal of cataract surgery is to restore clear vision and allow the patient to regain a better quality of life. This operation aims to:

Improve the sharpness of vision

Correct the visual problems caused by cataracts, such as blurred vision or difficulty distinguishing colors.

Eliminate cataract-related symptoms, such as glare or double vision.

Performed by an experienced surgeon under local anesthesia using a method called phacoemulsification, and lasting 15 to 30 minutes, this technique involves extracapsular removal of the lens by:
  • Making a small incision in the cornea;
  • Removing the core of the lens while leaving the capsule in place;
  • Breaking the lens into small pieces with ultrasound;
  • Aspirating the lens through a very small incision, so that healing is faster and the risk of complications is lower.
  • Inserting a folded implant into the capsule to replace the lens.

At this stage, when phacoemulsification is performed, no sutures are needed.

After the procedure, depending on the severity of the cataract, the eyes may feel sluggish.
After a few days, vision improves quickly and glasses can be fitted for appropriate correction.
In the meantime, some local care is prescribed, such as:
  • - Instilling eye drops;
  • - Applying an ointment;
  • - Wearing an eye shield.

The details and duration of this care will be specified in consultation with your surgeon, since in some cases he or she will remove sutures.
Alongside this care, certain activities will be discouraged for a set period, namely driving, work, operating machinery, or handling hazardous products.
That is why your ophthalmologist will tell you when you can resume your activities.

Even if your surgery was a great success, the risk of a minor secondary cataract is possible and, according to specialists, very common. How so?
Don't worry. With Mondial Santé, our patients' vision is restored using a laser, so further surgery is not required. In this case, the laser is the right solution for making small cuts in the cornea, for cutting the anterior capsule, and finally for pre-cutting the core of the lens.

Description of the results

The results of cataract surgery are often spectacular. Most patients regain clear vision in the days following the operation. Here are the main benefits:

Clear, sharp vision: You will notice a rapid improvement in your eyesight, free of the effects of the cataract (blurred vision, glare).

Lasting results: Once the intraocular lens is implanted, it stays in place for life, giving you permanent correction.

How results evolve

Vision improves immediately in most cases, although minor adjustments may occur for a few weeks after the procedure. Regular follow-up visits ensure that everything goes as planned.
