Four Lives Saved Thanks to a Successful Transplant Operation in Tunisia

On September 13, 2025, Tunisia was the scene of a remarkable medical feat that marked a turning point in organ transplantation. Four patients waiting for vital organs regained hope and life thanks to a series of transplants performed from a single donor. This achievement, made possible by exemplary coordination among different hospitals across the country, reflects the development of Tunisian medicine and the vital importance of organ donation.

An unprecedented chain of solidarity

On September 13, four patients battling serious illnesses received transplants of organs taken from a single donor. This gesture, which might seem routine in some countries, remains a remarkable achievement in others, where organ donation is not yet systematically widespread.

The operation was made possible by the collaboration of several Tunisian hospitals, including La Rabta Hospital in Tunis, Charles Nicolle Hospital, Mongi Slim Hospital in La Marsa and Fattouma Bourguiba Hospital in Monastir. These institutions demonstrated flawless organization, making it possible to retrieve and successfully transplant vital organs as quickly as possible. This teamwork saved four lives in just a few hours.

The Role of the Doctors and Transplant Teams

The success of these transplants is the result of the hard work and expertise of the medical teams. Dr. Mourad Ben Salah, head of the transplant program at La Rabta Hospital, stressed the importance of this inter-hospital cooperation: “This operation required meticulous organization. Thanks to high-tech equipment, trained teams and perfectly respected timing, we were able to perform these transplants under optimal conditions.”

The organs retrieved were a heart, a liver and two kidneys. The speed with which the organs were transplanted maximized the patients’ chances of success. Each of them received careful, professional care, ensuring a rapid recovery and a significant improvement in their health.

Organ Donation: An Act of Generosity and Humanity

The story of this success also rests on an exceptional act of generosity. The donor, a man in his forties, was the victim of a road accident that led to his brain death. Despite their grief and pain, his family made the courageous decision to donate his organs. This gesture, both difficult and noble, saved several human lives.

The donor’s family said they wanted to act in a spirit of solidarity. “We decided to donate his organs so that others could live. This gesture brings us a form of comfort, and we hope it will inspire others to do the same,” said the donor’s brother.

In Tunisia, although the law allows organ donation, the culture of donation is still fragile. Many Tunisians are unaware of the procedures to follow or are reluctant to donate their organs. The donor family’s gesture therefore carries deep significance, both medically and in raising awareness of the cause of organ donation.

The Recipients: A New Chance at Life

Among the transplant recipients, Mohamed, 55, who received a kidney, shared his emotion: “Before the transplant, my life was reduced to dialysis sessions that were extremely draining. I was tired and without hope. Today, I feel reborn.”

Khaled, 42, received a liver and expressed his gratitude: “I was losing my health because of a severe liver disease. Receiving this liver changed my life. I thank the donor’s family and the entire medical team.”

The heart and kidney transplants also allowed the other patients to recover quickly. Thanks to these procedures, all the recipients were able to resume a normal life, free from chronic treatments and the suffering associated with their illnesses.

Raising Awareness of Organ Donation: A Major Challenge

This achievement highlighted the importance of organ donation and the need to strengthen awareness campaigns on the subject. Despite the progress made in the medical field, there is still a high demand for organs in Tunisia, and an insufficient number of potential donors.

Dr. Ali Mechri, director of the National Center for the Promotion of Organ Transplantation (CNPTO), called for a national mobilization: “Organ donation saves lives. Every year, many Tunisians wait in vain for a compatible organ. It is crucial that more citizens sign up to the donor registry to meet growing needs.”

Health authorities therefore encouraged the public to learn about the organ donation process and to make informed decisions. CNPTO officials also stressed the role of associations in promoting this cause, calling for broader support and a better understanding of organ donation.
