Tunis, June 12, 2025 — A major medical advance for the African continent: on Thursday, Tunisia inaugurated the very first public service dedicated to ocular tumors in Africa, at the Hédi Raies Institute of Ophthalmology in Tunis. The opening ceremony was chaired by the Minister of Health, Dr. Mustapha Ferjani, who hailed this achievement as a historic milestone in public health.

This new specialized service includes 16 inpatient beds split equally between men and women (8 each), specialized clinics, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a child-friendly area, ensuring integrated, humane care suited to all ages.

On this occasion, the minister stressed the importance of integrating artificial intelligence and telemedicine into health policies, particularly to bring medical services closer to inland regions that are often marginalized. He also expressed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the future expansion of the project, notably through the creation of a dedicated surgery unit, thereby meeting the growing needs of patients suffering from serious eye conditions.
This initiative places Tunisia at the forefront of the fight against ocular cancers on the African continent, confirming its role as a regional leader in specialized healthcare.
